And for those of you who haven't had a parent die....

I thought you guys would all find this morbidly amusing. When my dad and sister were going through our bank situation, taking my mom's names off of the bannk accounts, they found a savings account in my name and my mother's name with a little bit of money in it. I had no clue this thing existed, but hey, I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. I withdrew the money today, intending to put it into my regular bank account.

Later in the day, I received a letter in the mail from the IRS. It seems that since my mom's name was on this account, it's subject to an inheritance tax, even though my name was the primary name on the account. I now owe something in the ballpark of $30 to the federal government because my mother died.

You know it's a bad situation when the government needs to tax its citizens for their relatives dying in order to finance its totally unjustifiable wars abroad. Woo.

Isn't the GOP trying to eliminate the death tax?

The funny thing is that it was part of Kerry's platform, too. Everyone wants to eliminate the damned thing. It's just that it's difficult to justify eliminating any sort of tax when the government can't control spending.

Then again, Bush did just that a few years back. Ahh well... Such is politics. It just pissed me off that they hit me with the inheritance tax when my mom was just a secondary name on my savings account. It's fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, I don't think you can get many people from either side of the aisle to agree with government taxing you on money which has already been taxed.

It's a bit ridiculous to tax a person simply for being dead.

Eliminating anything from government is next to impossible, whether it's a tax, a program or an employee. I've worked state and local government during my winter and summer breaks and it's out of control as far as what the employees actually do versus how much they're being paid.

You have to do something criminal to be fired (and even then that's not a guarantee).

You know, my dad saw him the other night, and didn't bitch slap him for me.... I think I might have to yell at the guy. Then again, there were like 500,000 other people plus secret service galore between him and Bushy. Ahhh well....

Yeah, maybe... then again, why waste it on Bush when you could give the bitch-slapping to Santorum?!

Interesting story. Especially because the first million dollars can be passed on to family members tax free. Assuming that there was less than a million in the account I think you should go talk to a tax attorney. Good luck recouping the losses. Ohh and fuck big government

I think you're referring to the federal tax... I'm talking about the commonwealth tax, here, and so far as I know, I have to pay it. And, at least as far as this account is concerned, I'm not going to flip out over it. I had to pay all of $10 in tax, at the end of things, as they actually provided the wrong percentage on the invoice.

Who are you again??
